Senior Engineering Manager

As Sr. Engineering Manager, you are responsible for the effective operation of the value stream focused around software delivery by the engineering teams and streamlining the operations and optimizing team’s performance and engineering processes.. This also includes people and team management and broader HR topics like motivation, personal growth, values and productivity, organisational setup.

An analogy: For the Digital Sales Value Stream, the role can be seen as the ‘mini-CTO’ of the value stream where the Product Director is the ‘mini-CEO’. The role is part of the value stream leadership and therefore also responsible to drive the overall strategy of the value stream in line with the company vision and strategy.

What you'll do

The RnD organisation is divided into multiple value streams focussing on different value propositions. In this case the focus is on the Digital Sales value stream.

In this role, you are responsible for creating the conditions in which development teams are set up for high performance and can iteratively deliver customer value while taking all of the non-functional requirements like security, maintainability, and reliability into account. On a day-to-day basis you work closely with your Engineering Managers to surface any anti-pattern or dysfunction that impacts the team’s performance and ensure the team works towards solving those.

  • You have excellent communication and leadership skills to inspire and motivate others. You easily navigate stakeholders across Backbase, from 1-to-1s with your team members to working directly with senior leadership;
  • Together with your Engineering Managers, you will collaborate on defining processes and setting priorities in regards to recruitment forecasting with the aim of ensuring your teams have the capacity to meet the demand of our customer engagements;
  • You spar with the Engineering Director of the department to create and implement best practices, engineering vision, strategy, policies, processes, and procedures to aid and improve the business performance. The engineering strategies and processes you develop should aid in meeting business objectives and operational needs in terms of quality, delivery targets, as well as enable the company to function and compete effectively in the market;
  • You will also have a significant focus on implementing a modern Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), championing ways of working, facilitating fast time to value, and driving forward the use of Artificial Intelligence for automation in the everyday practice of software development;
  • As Sr. Engineering Manager you balance key aspects of the software development lifecycle for your development teams. From adhering to non-functional requirements, automated releases, ensuring quality, coding standards, automation, integration testing, release acceptance validation, security, infrastructure, all the way up to understanding all the little details of the product domain within your value stream. You will ensure strong craftsmanship and effective processes for your team optimizing quality, predictability and output as that is our way to stay ahead of our competitors and serve our customers best.

Together with your Engineering Managers you take the initiative to explore, evangelize, and implement innovative technologies and approaches within the business in order to improve the platform as well as the developers' and customers' experience.

Who you are

  • 5+ years of experience in an Engineering Leadership role in a product organisation;
  • Experienced in managing other engineering managers besides engineering teams;
  • Deep understanding of Software Engineering principles, practices, patterns, and techniques;
  • Proven track record in cross team and value stream improvements and optimisations;

Value-oriented - you want to create solutions that bring value to our customers;

Strong communication and collaboration skills;

  • English language, written and spoken.
