Backend Engineer
We opened the doors of our Business Development Centre (BDC) in the heart of Hyderabad in December 2020. Young at heart, the BDC is a wonderful space that strengthens Backbase’s presence in the APAC region. Nestled in the middle of Hyderabad, the state-of-the-art building sits amidst other global brands. The location offers stunning views of hills and lakes, while nearby there is a selection of restaurants, traditional bazaars, and other cultural hotspots.
We are looking for a highly capable Backend Engineer (Python) with 4-8 years of
experience to become a key individual contributor in developing, designing, and
optimizing our scalable backend services and cloud platforms.
About the Role
As a Backend Engineer, you will be responsible for the core logic, performance, and
architecture of our web applications and services. You will work independently to
understand the existing codebase, drive impactful enhancements, and contribute to system
design. This role requires strong proficiency in Python, API development (FastAPI),
database design (Postgres), and cloud-native practices.
What you'll do
- Key Responsibilities Core Backend Development & Optimization
- API Development & Implementation: Take primary ownership of designing, developing, and maintaining high-performance, scalable RESTful APIs using Python and FastAPI.
- Database Expertise: Design, optimize, and manage complex database schemas and queries in PostgreSQL. Ensure data integrity, performance, and scalability.
- Code Quality & Efficiency: Write clean, efficient, and well-tested code, adhering strictly to engineering best practices. Actively participate in thorough code reviews.
- System Enhancement: Analyze existing backend code and implement improvements, new features, and performance enhancements based on product needs and impact analysis.
- Problem Solving: Independently analyze and debug complex backend issues, devise robust and scalable technical solutions, and rapidly implement fixes. Architecture & Design
- Design Ownership: Actively participate in technical design sessions and translate product requirements into practical, detailed backend technical specifications.
- Distributed Systems: Apply principles of Domain-Driven Design (DDD) and drive the implementation of scalable, fault-tolerant microservices architecture and event- driven systems.
- Testing & Reliability: Implement comprehensive unit and integration tests to ensure high code coverage and system reliability for all backend services.
- DevOps & Deployment: Work closely with DevOps principles, using tools like Docker and Kubernetes to automate deployment (CI/CD pipelines) and ensure services are robustly scaled on cloud platforms (AWS/GCP/Azure). Collaboration & Growth
- Stakeholder Alignment: Collaborate effectively with Product Managers and Frontend teams to define API contracts and ensure technical solutions meet business goals.
- Documentation: Create and maintain clear, current technical documentation for system architecture, APIs, and key features.
- Continuous Improvement: Be proactive in knowledge sharing, peer mentorship, and integrating emerging technologies (like AI) to enhance system functionality and efficiency.
Who you are
- Required Skills & Qualifications Must-Have
- 4-8 years of professional experience focused primarily on backend software development.
- Deep expertise in Python and FastAPI (or similar async framework).
- Mastery of PostgreSQL including complex query writing, schema design, and optimization techniques.
- Strong practical experience designing and implementing Microservices, RESTful APIs, and event-driven systems.
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and containerization tools (Docker).
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to complex system design and solve technical challenges independently. Good-to-Have
- Experience with in-memory caching solutions like Redis.
- Familiarity with serverless architectures (e.g., AWS Lambda).
- Experience with AI/ML integration or building data-intensive backend applications.
- Experience in high-traffic or regulated domains (BFS, e-commerce, SaaS, or fintech).
